SMART Plan – South Dade Transitway Corridor, Miami-Dade County, Fl
PLANNING
Summary
The Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Plan is a comprehensive plan that advances six rapid transit corridors to examine the costs and viability of extending rail or other high-speed transit options along each corridor in Miami-Dade County. Jason King, leading the Dover, Kohl & Partners Team, focused their efforts on the South Dade Transitway Corridor. This corridor is one mile wide and extends approximately 20 miles from the Dadeland South Metrorail Station to SW 344th Street Transit Terminal in Florida City. The corridor study plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the County, and as such, the Miami-Dade TPO seeks maximum public involvement.
The South Corridor SMART Plan was developed through an open planning process that included a series of public workshops. These workshops took place in Old Cutler Bay, Pinecrest, and Florida City in December 2017. Community members participated in four interactive exercises at each workshop. The results were tallied and shared with participants, offering a glimpse into the potential future of the corridor. Three-dimensional models were displayed at select points along the corridor, showcasing potential uses, amenities, job creation opportunities, and municipal tax revenue benefits.
